Film meditation, long tapas and who is granted boons

Book 1 · Discipline, tapas and the practitioner's conduct Also: Gods, creation and other worlds, Mind, brain and consciousness

I saw in one movie like the meditation was shown like only saying “Om Namah Shivaya”?

Guruji: What else they can show in a movie? It is just a portrait. Such things are described in our books — but they are done for thousands of years. Maybe standing on one leg for thousands of years were developing their brains; and also it is a test for your determination: whether they were qualified to see Shiva face to face or not — it is just a qualification.

You think such tapas could be done in physical body?

Guruji: It is done in physical body.

But Shiva will grant them blessing anyway?

Guruji: Whoever will be qualified. Who is a bad person and who is a good person? But look at the creator Brahma: he was always giving boons to all the daityas and rakshas: he never gave a boon to a good person. That means: those people have very strong mind and very strong determination and should be qualified.

§2

Shiva's game with Parvati

Book 4 · Shiva and Shakti (Sati, Kama, Dattatreya, Ardhanarishwar) Also: Scriptures, myths and their meaning

Which game Shiva was playing with Parvati?

Guruji: This is called “chopard” — very ancient game. And they say that he made day and night the dice and all those things — they were jivas: then they were playing the game of life.

Do people play it now?

Guruji: Yes — old people still play.

§3

Parvati's ball play

Book 4 · Puranic stories retold and decoded Also: Gods, creation and other worlds

And I remember in Shiva Purana there is a description that Parvati was playing volley-ball?

Guruji: Not volleyball; with a ball. And it is written in many books that only girls are playing with the ball. Now all men are playing. It was called “kandulk” — kanduk kriya: play ball.

§4

Six-syllable or five-syllable mantra

Book 4 · Mantra, japa and bija; the alphabet and OM

Which mantra is more suitable — sadaskshara or panchakshara?

Guruji: Now Shiva is panchakshari, yes. Hindus have fashion to put Om in front of everything. Just a cultural kick.
