Guruji: you do karma to make a new dharma. Very simple approach. It’s impossible to separate them.
some people say that dharma means “duty”?
Guruji: ok, but then you will have to do karma to fulfil your duty. How they can do the separate things? In Sanskrit the definition is given for the word “dharma”: dharayet sa dharma – which carries you through life is dharma. So whatever is carrying you, supporting you can be called dharma.
Even Mother Earth is carrying you: she is also embodiment of dharma.
Your career, society – everything is dharma. Then your breath, your soul, your spirit – they are carrying you, so they are all part of dharma.
You need to have a highly developed mind to understand these things. This is just not only duty: duty for whom?
someone says – it’s like social dharma and family dharma to pay the debts to society, country and family – but it’s not dharma?
Guruji: it’s part of dharma! Among the Hindus we believe there are three debts everybody is carrying: Pitra hrin– we’re in debt to our fathers, forefathers; Dev hrin– to the gods, who created everything; and Rishi hrin – for giving us wisdom. Sowe have to do our best to payback and use these things very wise.
could we say that the person who is not doing his duties properly are out of dharma?
Guruji: yes, usually some people are in prison or police is after them.
I mean if the person chooses the spiritual path?
Guruji: no, that is their dharma.
if we take the situation like it was in ancient times: when the person is going to the forest to practice? On one hand he abandons his family, but…
Guruji: but on the other hand family is doing its duties towards that person, not stopping him to attain wisdom. So it goes both ways, not only one way.
Only by going away from society you’re in a situation to observe objectively and a different understanding will come. That’s why many mendicants were living in jungle for many-many years – they came back to society to teach. Because they have the objective observation and they could see what is going wrong and what we should do to be right: that’s how all the knowledge came up.
so we cannot say that such spiritual person is going out of his dharma?
Guruji: spiritual person, who is going away from society, is not a fugitive; if you’re running from something or you’re a coward to face certain situation – then you’re not spiritual at all.
Spiritual person I think is brave enough and is able to take responsibility to what he has done: he should face all the consequences for that. A fugitive is not so spiritual person: if you’re running away from the situation – it’s nothing. We should not consider them. But then they say: cowards do survive; but survival is not the only name of the game.
most of the time the situation is created like this: if you’re able to do all your duties to the society, to the family, to the country – you will never take the spiritual path?
Guruji: see, anything you’re doing – can be spiritual. If there is no spirit inside you – what you will do? Every karma, no matter what your motive is, based on spirituality. We need to think on that also. Main thing is to understand the exact: how the dynamics of the things is working. Then you need to calm down first, stop reacting, and start developing your brain.
how you can know your dharma if you’re not developing your mind?
Guruji: impossible, yes. You will follow some teacher who maybe not knowing his own dharma and maybe misguide you – that’s why so much confusions in society.
so not knowing your dharma you just may take someone advises as it – and think it’s yours?
Guruji: but you have to make sure – the person is wise enough to give you advice. There is a great word in English: vice – means bad things; vice and wise. So is he giving you adVICEor adWISE?(smiling).you need to understand it first( laughing)
