Holi: equality under colours, the big fire as cremation, the spirit world and Shiva's ganas

Book 4 · Puranic stories retold and decoded Also: Death, ghosts and the afterlife, Gods, creation and other worlds

Holi is one of the most important festivals for hindus, in India. It has their beauty that on Holi day, when people are throwing colors – everybody is considered as equal. No difference between caste, creed – nothing is observe. Anybody can wish anybody and he can put color with enough respect on anybody. Sometimes, when somebody asked me – what is my interpretation of Holy, because there are so many stories in Puranas, but you know – I’m a yogi, so my interpretation is different. On full moon day we burn Holy – a very big fire is created and we put fire to it. And next day everybody is throwing colors at each other – they are all equal. My interpretation is – the big fire represents cremation. And then after cremation you enter into the spirit world. In the spiritual world everybody is intoxicated, everybody is dancing, everybody is enjoying and you can’t recognize who is who – because they are so much under colors. It is a very-very spiritual festival of India, and I think it is directly connected with Shiva. All Shiva’s ganas dancing and looking mad – that is Holy in my opinion.
