DOCUMENTED STORIES ABOUT SAMADHI
He came to Your Guru to pay his respect?
Guruji: He told me that story.
What about that story, when he was given the skill by some sadhu?
Guruji: This sadhu came to Benares to get permission from a British collector- and he was given permission. My Guru told me that happened in the late 1930’s, maybe 1936 after his father’s death. He prepared himself for the government guard they had put up, his body was shaved - entire body was shaved; so he drank some ghee and went into samadhi.
After six months – he told me about when the assistant was there or maybe disciple; when he was dug up again – his body looked yellowish and
appeared like he had just been shaved. It took about one week for him to revive, with whatever the assistant was doing. He became very famous there, and lots of money was showered on him.
He knew Lahiri Mahasaya by reputation. So my Guru went to see him when he was out of it. He acquainted him for a lunch, which he accepted graciously and showed up. Then my Guru asked him: how did he achieve it and how did he feel when he was in that condition? He honestly said: I feel nothing, it is as fine as a coma; but all aging and body functions stop absolutely, even hair growth or nail growth are not there.
He said that when he was young – maybe in his 30’s or so – physically he was in shape but then there was some big tragedy or something in Chitrakut hill, which is called Hanuman Dhara. There is a temple of Hanuman: you have to climb hundreds of steps – very high. So because of that emotional trauma, he was thinking about committing suicide - so he climbed Hanuman Dhara mountain – very high, I’ve been there. And he was standing, planning to jump from that mountain, to commit suicide. Another sadhu somehow stopped him: from where he appeared – he didn’t know. But he told him: don’t die, come with me: we will teach you how to die. And he became his disciple. That sadhu gave him this art.
An amazing thing: when I visited Chitrakut in the1990’s, I inquired about some very old people there, old sadhus. They said – yes, we’ve heard about him; but he disappeared or died – we don’t know. There isn't much known about him in Chitrakut.
So he was practicing as a yogi or he was a sadhu?
Guruji: He was a sadhu- not exactly a yogi. He was seen from time to time and made thousands of rupees – his devotees were showering him with money, and he became known as a great person. Of course, he was a great person. How many people are able to show that?
In an even more ancient time: there was a documentary with evidence of one yogi, which the British government documented. He went into samadhi and then the wheat crop was sewed over after that; and when it was harvested – he was dug up and came out of it. That is a documentary thing. Not many cases.
The story including when somebody was trying to open their mouth…?
Guruji: Yes, with a crowbar, in Benares.
When did it happen?
Guruji: My Guru was alive and I was there – maybe in 1985. He simply jumped into the Ganges and wasn’t seen anymore. Otherwise samadhi was talked about so much. We agreed that the samadhi which Lahiri Mahasaya learned is different.
He had that conversation with Your Guru?
Guruji: Yes; and he simply said to him: You achieve samadhi in a different way than I, it may be the real samadhi because You’ve experienced so many things. When I entered the ground – it was as fine as a very deep sleep or I’m unconscious like a coma. That was his statement.
Because he wanted to commit suicide and know the death as it is – so he was taught the death of the physical…? And death of the mind as well?
Guruji: Yes. He was not educated also – but he knew that. And the main part, which is very important: he was unable to do khechari.
