# The prince’s question

Published work-in-progress: adapted dialogue, not a literal translation.

A selective graphic adaptation of Mitra I.4–12, not a word-for-word translation. Artwork and translations are production drafts.

## ch01-p01 — The homecoming

Source: Mitra I.4.1–6; setting support: Valmiki Ramayana I.5.10–19

Arrival on foot is staging, not a specified travel method. Architecture, costume palette and exact crowd are reconstruction. Do not depict a military conquest or an adult crowned Rama.

### EN

narrator: Rama returned from pilgrimage. Ayodhya received him with flowers.

narrator: For eight days, Ayodhya celebrated his homecoming.

### HI

## ch01-p02 — The quiet after celebration

Source: Mitra I.4.7–11; I.5.1–8

Days compressed, not an abrupt change immediately at the gate. Costume restrained during withdrawal; no unsupported exact duration for the change.

### EN

narrator: At first, his days followed their familiar course: morning rites, the royal council, and conversation with the sages.

narrator: Little by little, he withdrew. Still in his fifteenth year, Rama sat in silence, his cheek upon his hand.

### HI

## ch01-p03 — A father asks

Source: Mitra I.5.10–15

Condenses repeated requests. The lap gesture in I.5.12 is omitted, not contradicted with an invented refusal. Vasistha’s words are reassurance in the narrative, not modern medical advice.

### EN

dasharatha: My son, what troubles you? Tell me what weighs on your mind.

rama: Father, I have no anxiety to speak of.

narrator: Yet his silence continued. Dasharatha turned to Vasistha.

vasistha: There is a reason for this, King. Let us understand it before we give way to fear.

### HI

## ch01-p04 — At the gate

Source: Mitra I.6.3–13,18–23

Ruddy matted hair and aged ascetic appearance source-led. Exact face and robe are reconstruction. Radiance conveyed by light and composition, not a magic aura. Pot/vina variant remains unresolved.

### EN

narrator: Meanwhile, the sage Vishvamitra reached Ayodhya. Rakshasas had repeatedly disrupted his sacrifice.

vishvamitra: Tell the king that Kaushika, son of Gadhi, is waiting.

### HI

## ch01-p05 — The king comes on foot

Source: Mitra I.6.14–26,30

Vamadeva is present but has no established portrait; appearance provisional. Do not replace the walk with a chariot procession.

### EN

narrator: Dasharatha rose from his golden throne. With Vasistha, Vamadeva and his companions, he went on foot to welcome the sage.

dasharatha: Your coming honours this house. Tell me how I may serve you.

### HI

## ch01-p06 — The sage’s request

Source: Mitra I.6.30–38; I.7.4–14,19–24

Ten nights comes from I.7.23. Hospitality vessels are not evidence resolving Vishvamitra’s personal held-object variant. Dialogue condenses the request.

### EN

vishvamitra: For ten nights, my sacrifice must be guarded. I will not curse those who disturb it.

vishvamitra: Send Rama with me. Under my protection, he can overcome those who disturb the rites.

### HI

## ch01-p07 — The father beneath the crown

Source: Mitra I.8.1–18,23

Distinguish Dasharatha’s anxious account of Rama’s capacity from an omniscient assertion. Do not insert later Rama-Ravana battle imagery.

### EN

dasharatha: Rama is only fifteen. He has scarcely left the life of the palace—and now he grows pale and takes little food.

dasharatha: Take me instead, with my army. How can I send my child into such danger?

### HI

## ch01-p08 — A promise and a trust

Source: Mitra I.9.1–15,22–23

Earth trembling is explicitly narrated at I.9.5; the chosen small visual indicators are staging. Condenses the weapons genealogy without replacing it with new mythology.

### EN

vishvamitra: You promised your help. Will the house of Raghu now abandon its word?

narrator: As the sage’s anger rose, the earth trembled. Vasistha spoke.

vasistha: Keep your promise, King. Rama will not be unprotected. You know the wisdom and strength of the sage who asks for him.

### HI

## ch01-p09 — News of Rama

Source: Mitra I.10.1–15,23–30,41–51; I.11.1–8

Attendant’s long report is condensed. Preserve concern and the invitation to speak; do not suggest deprivation, self-harm or withdrawal is a recommended spiritual method.

### EN

attendant: He says he will come, my lord. But he keeps to himself. Food, jewels, gardens—nothing restores his delight. We do not know how to help him.

vishvamitra: Bring him here. I believe these questions arise from discernment. Let us hear him and help clear his confusion.

### HI

## ch01-p10 — Rama enters the court

Source: Mitra I.11.9–28,32–38

I.11.20–21 explicitly supplies fine apparel, necklace and hair gems. Floor seat at I.11.28. Costume change is narrative continuity, not a new identity. Faces remain art choices.

### EN

narrator: Rama came with Lakshmana and Shatrughna. He greeted his father and the elders, then sat on a cloth spread upon the floor.

vishvamitra: Speak, Rama. What troubles your mind? What sorrow has brought you to this?

### HI

## ch01-p11 — What the journey changed

Source: Mitra I.12.1–13

These are Rama’s opening questions, not the completed teaching or the narrator declaring all action meaningless. Preserve his first-person inquiry.

### EN

rama: I grew up and studied in this palace. Then I travelled to the holy places, wishing to understand how people live.

rama: On that journey, questions arose. We are born and die; what we possess changes and passes away. What lasting happiness can I find in it?

rama: No one has sold us, yet we live as though bound. Why does the mind cling so tightly?

### HI

## ch01-p12 — What am I?

Source: Mitra I.12.15–23,27–28

This editorial chapter ends within Rama’s longer speech, which must continue in chapter 2. Do not imply Vasistha has already answered or Rama’s liberation is complete.

### EN

rama: What use is a kingdom if I do not understand myself? What am I—and what is all this?

rama: How can suffering be brought to an end? That is the question that will not leave me.

rama: What but the knowledge of truth can dispel this confusion?

### HI
